What's Been On My Mind...

Here it is.

I am sure I looked quite odd snapping photographs of the wedding wall at the closest bookstore yesterday. That is my book, there, neatly aligned beside the Groom's Instruction Manual.

Don't let anyone ever convince you that a book can just appear out of nowhere. I suppose I didn't make things any easier for myself by starting this project when I had a nine month-old scuttling around, but fear of drowning in the maternal sublime (and the lurking dread developing a trench-like work rut) kicked me into gear. By the time it hit shelves, the baby was three years-old and his brother had his ten month anniversary.

Oddly, now that Something New is out in the world, there is as much work to do for it and take care of it than there was putting it together. (This shouldn't surprise me since everyone told me it would be the case and yet, I'm overwhelmed.) So this is yet another way in which producing a book bears some resemblance to producing a baby. The book, though, won't require that I send it to nursery school.

You need to rearrange that shelf so Something New is facing out!

You'll get yourself thrown out of B&N for doing that (literally). Believe it or not publishers pay for that placement.

By far the most appealing looking binding and title on the shelf! I will make a record of the UWS (82) B&N for your documentation project.
Congratulations, Elise- You did it!! Just great. Hurray!

Congratulations Elise! I can relate--my book was published the same month my daughter was born...guess which baby got most of my attention? So I guess I'm lucky any books have sold at all :) Definitely turn the book facing out--no way will you get thrown out of the bookstore. And make sure you tell the staff who you are--they'll let you sign copies and then put a sticker on the front "author signed copy". I'm so happy you have a book out there--I've been reading your blog for a long time...and don't think I don't know you were the first "alternative" bridal resource out there, so kudos to you.

Totally agree with Emily. Elise knows I'm kidding around -- though I know she also knows someone who literally did get asked to leave a B&N for turning her book around!

Many thanks for all the good wishes. (I do know someone who was almost escorted from a chain for rearranging her book.) I had not thought to go in and offer to sign copies. (Would that work even at the big chains do you think?)

And Emily, congratulations to you on your book and your baby. If you feel up to it, I would love to hear what your book is about. You can always write to me at the indieetiquette address (indieetiquette AT yahoo dot com).

Cheers and all best,
Elise

On Sunday, at the B&N on Broadway and 66, Something Else was on a special wedding book table on the second floor with seven or eight other titles. Four in the stack - I bought two. Could not locate it in the shelved Wedding section - but the table placemet was right off the escalator- good! Sadly, was unprepared- no camera.

But am having so much fun reading it! You have such a reassuring voice, Elise. I feel both ok about having insecurities- shared by many!- and fortified by the community of people who, through the kindess and consideration of etiquette, show ways to overcome them.
thank you!
